Joel Howell, M.D., Ph.D. speaks about the history of the first university-owned hospital in the United States, established in a former professor's house on the University of Michigan campus in 1869. Howell is the co-author of “Medicine at Michigan: A History of the University of Michigan Medical School at the Bicentennial.”

Howell is U-M’s Elizabeth Farrand Collegiate Professor in Medical History, and a professor of internal medicine, history, and health management and policy.

He was recently awarded lifetime achievement recognition from ASNC as its 2018 Mario Verani Lecturer and the German Cardiac Society as its 2019 Gold Key Recipient and Keynote Lecturer.
