If I am tested as COVID-19 positive, you need no panic, as most of the people that is 80 to 90% of the population have a very mild kind of infection of COVID-19, where they have cough, cold, fever, running nose. There is about a very small percentage that is 10% of the population who will require father treatment, with antivirals or steroids. Very few about 3 to 5% of the people develop respiratory distress and need to be admitted in a hospital and require hospital. So if you require hospital admission. You need to relax and contact your family physician and have a teleconsultation in your regular practice, we have lot of patients whom w e consult over the phone at their home you just need to isolate a home so that you are not a risk to the other people at home. In case others at home develop symptoms it is better to have them tested and isolate from children and elderly people mainly because they are at risk of getting infection from you., the recovery period varies but it is like any cough, cold and fever where it could vary from a week to 10 days. Usually about 11 days is about the time period and the virus levels in the body comes down and the patient stats recovering.

This is one of the most common things that people ask me , what should I keep at home and what should I not forget to keep in this covid situation. Covid usually presents with fever, cough, cold but nowadays the presentation is happening with vomiting lose motion, stomach pain and many cases there is no fever at home. So there are few things you need to keep at home, you need to keep a kit which contains a thermometer, pulse oximeter, and have to keep your oxygen saturation monitored especially when you have fever, cough, cold because in many cases there are no symptoms and fever is very mild and goes off in 1 or 2 days and then after that it is directly hitting on the l lungs. So oxygen saturation has to be monitored even if you have a slight cough or cold and hence it is important to keep your temperature and pulse oximeter at home. Steam inhalation is very important. So keep a small kettle so that you can boil hot water and you can drink hot water and you can keep a bowl of water, 5 minutes of steam inhalation, morning, afternoon and night. We have seen many patients recover just with steam inhalation and some home remedies. So it is important to keep small things ate home like black pepper, tulsi leaves, and you also have basic things like dry ginger which can be used to prepare the kada or the drink, which is a decoction of tea, water , dry ginger pepper seeds and tulsi leaves boil nicely and drink for two times. So these items should be ready at home to see that your immune system is on a boost. Chywanprash is again something that is helping in most of the cases. Don’t forget to include the homeopathic kit containing Arsenicum album and nuxvomica. Again there are medicines like aconite and belladonna.

The normal oxygen level in anybody would be somewhere between 97 to 100-%. At times it can be a little lower 94 and 95. When somebody has underlying lung problem, it could be bronchial asthma, bronchiectiasis, it could be tuberculosis and that has resulted in fibrosis of lungs and the oxygen saturation has started dropping buy don’t have to get worried if it is showing 94 or 95. Even then it is fine. But anything less than 93% then it is matter of concern indicating that this person needs oxygen support and might have to be moved to hospital for oxygen support. Because the coronavirus mainly affects the legs, it is important for anybody who has tested positive for COVID needs to check their oxygen saturation levels frequently in a day to know what their saturation level is but it is important that you follow these reading. Using a proper method is the saturation is showing low levels, then discuss with your physician then or it is normal that somebody’s saturation is showing low levels. At times when the saturation even if it is dropping and the physician feels you can be managed at home.

COVID-19 the new viral infection that has taken the word by storm can have skin manifestations. Around 20% of the symptomatic patients show skin changes. The most common being maculopapular rash. It is a generalized red rash seen on the entire body. commonly we see it in dengue, measles, chikungunya, bacterial infections like typhoid almost 50% of the patients can have this maculopapular rash. The next commonest would be Pseudochilblains. This would be in Caucasians or Western literature. So 20% of the patients will have Pseudo chilblains which is redness and swelling of the tips of the fingers and sometimes even gangrene of the tips of fingers. This can happen in cold climate in tips of fingers. So this can occur even in COVID 19.
