How To Protect Yourself And Your Family From Coronavirus / COVID-19

In early 2020, a new virus began generating headlines all over the world because of the unprecedented speed of its transmission. From its origins in a food market in Wuhan, China, in December 2019 to countries as far-flung as the United-States and the Philippines, the virus has affected hundreds of thousands, with a rising death toll day by day. Follow the guidelines to help protect yourself from catching, carrying and passing on Covid-19 1.Wash your hands frequently and carefully Use water and soap and rub your hands for at least 20-seconds. Work the lather to your wrists, between your fingers, and under your fingernails. You can also use an antibacterial and antiviral-soap. Use hand sanitizer when you cannot wash your hands properly. 2.Avoid touching your face Covid-19 can live on hard surfaces for up to 72-hours. You can get the virus on your hands if you touch a surface like a doorknob, gas-pump handle, or your cell-phone. Avoid touching any part of your face or head including your mouth, nose, and eyes. Also avoid biting your fingernails. This can give virus a chance to go from your hands into your body. 3.Cover your mouth and nose when you cough and sneeze Covid-19 is found in high amounts in the nose and mouth. This means it can be carried by air droplets to other people when you cough or sneeze. It can also land on hard surfaces and stay there for up to 3-days. Use a tissue or sneeze into your elbow to keep your hands as clean as possible. Wash your hands carefully after you sneeze or cough, regardless. 4.Clean and disinfect surfaces Use alcohol-based disinfectants to clean hard surfaces in your home like countertops, door handles, furniture, and toys. Also clean your phone, laptop, and anything else you use regularly several-times a day. Disinfect areas after you bring groceries or packages into your home. Use white-vinegar or hydrogen-peroxide solutions for general cleaning in between disinfecting surfaces. 5.Take social distancing seriously If you are carrying the Covid-19 virus, it will be found in high amounts in your spit (sputum). This can happen even if you do not have symptoms. Social distancing means staying home and working remotely when possible. If you must go out for necessities, keep a distance of 6-feet from other people. You can transmit the virus by speaking to someone in close contact to you. 6.Do not gather in groups Being in a group or gathering makes it more likely that you will be in close contact with someone. This includes avoiding all religious places of worship, as you may have to sit or stand too close to another congregant. It also includes congregating at parks or beaches. 7.Wash fresh groceries Soak all raw, whole fruits and vegetables in a solution of food-grade hydrogen-peroxide or white-vinegar. Let dry before putting them away in your fridge and cupboards. You can also use vegetable antibacterial wash to clean produce. Wash your hands before and after handling fresh-produce.

1.Wash your hands

First and foremost, dermatologist Josh Zeichner, MD, urges washing your hands regularly. You don't need anything fancy. Just use plain old soap and water, and make sure to wash up thoroughly and for at least 20 seconds. Think about the way you used to wash your hands in kindergarten, Zeichner says. Lather soap in your hands as you sing the alphabet before rinsing off.

2.Only use hand sanitizer as an alternative.

If you absolutely don't have access to soap and water, use hand sanitizer. Physician Sara Gottfried, MD, recommends hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol. Rub the gel over all the surfaces of your hands and fingers until your hands are dry. This should take around 20 seconds, she says.

3.Moisturize to keep your skin barrier healthy.

With all that hand washing and sanitizing, it's easy for your hands to feel like the Sahara Desert. To keep the skin barrier of your hands healthy, .

4.Clean your rings.

Just as important as washing your hands, make sure to clean your jewelry as well. Everyday jewelry, such as engagement or wedding rings, are dirtier than you think. Dirt, oil, and microorganisms can live and build up there and potentially spread infections, Zeichner says. Give them a good rinse with a jewelry cleaning solution or wipe every morning after you wake up or at night before you go to bed.

5.Disinfect door knobs and electronics.

With so many events getting canceled, you're probably spending a lot more time at home right now. And it's best for your personal hygiene to keep your quarters in tip-top shape.

6.Stop touching your face.
Contaminated fingers can lead to spread of the infection, explains Zeicher. So avoid touching your eyes, mouth, and nose with dirty fingers. In theory, it sounds easy enough, but it's a lot harder than you think.

7.Throw away your tissues.

If you sneeze, cough, or blow your nose, immediately dispose of your tissues. It's simple, but it goes a long way.

8.Don't smoke.

Because coronavirus is a respiratory illness, smokers are at a higher risk. If you occasionally smoke, it's best to avoid it. And if you're an everyday smoker, this might be the best time to try to quit or seek help for quitting.

9.Decrease your stress.

Yes, your stress levels can definitely contribute to your health. Long-term stress can affect everything from your immunity and your digestion to your sleep and reproductive systems.

10.Get enough sleep.
If you're feeling extra anxious right now, you might not realize that your sleep is suffering. Gottfried encourages healthy sleep practices.
