The kitchen sink in our home wasn't draining properly so I knew it was clogged from years of grease, egg shells, carrot peels, potato peels and some occasional coffee grounds going down the disposal.

I bought this Dr. Drain 25 foot 1/4 Auger to snake the clog out of the drain pipe under our dual kitchen sink.

I pushed in the auger the entire 25 foot length and spun the handle while inserting and pulling out a foot or two of the auger to really clean out any debris, bacon fat, vegetable peels, fruit rinds and maybe even some pet hair out of the drain.

It took me a few tries going deeper and deeper in the drain to clear it out and get the water flowing again.

Then I poured a small amount of Drano followed by boiling hot water to really clean out the pipes.

How to Unclog a Kitchen Sink Drain -- by Home Repair Tutor

If you want to learn how to unclog a kitchen sink this video will help.

I guarantee you can do this yourself and likely save $75-$95.

The first step is to check the P-Trap for clogs. This likely is the culprit. Grab a 5 gallon bucket and place it under the P-Trap. It's a good idea to place towels under the bucket.

Slowly turn the P-Trap slip nuts counterclockwise. Be careful, water might rush out from the P-Trap. I recommend using a 5 gallon bucket to catch all the water that's up in the kitchen sink.

In this video you'll see the clog was just in the drain, I didn't even have to do anything to remove the debris.

But what if your clog isn't in the P-Trap or drain? It's likely in the wall pipe and you need to remove it mechanically via a hand auger.

Ridgid's Power Spin is a great hand auger that costs only $40. You can use it by hand or via a power drill. If you unclog your kitchen sink just once it justifies the purchase of the Power Spin.

You can also use this tool for clogs in your bathroom sink, tub, or shower.

Press down on the Power Spin trigger and feed the auger into the wall pipe. Spin the Power Spin until you clear the clog and reverse your procedure to pull it up out of the pipe.

How to Unclog a Kitchen Sink

When you have a really bad sink clog, sometimes using a plunger or
plumbers snake just wont get through the clog. In these situations you
may need to start opening up pipes. In most cases the problem is near
the P-trap which is directly under the sink. This video will show you
how it's done.

How to Unplug a Bathtub Drain Using a Snake or Drum Auger

Don't worry, since doing this video I've cleaned my bathroom and it sparkles. Re-caulked, everything.

This video shows you how to use a drum auger/snake to clean the pipes in your house. The basic technique applies to all the pipes in your house.

I don't recommend using Drano or liquid cleaner, because it doesn't work well and just goes into the water supply.

Using a snake doesn't use any chemicals, and you get to pull out whatever hair was blocking your drain instead of forcing it down farther. In my old place, the drains would plug up every two years, and that's with hardly anything going down. Just be careful to not force the snake down, as you don't want to break any pipes.

Thanks. I hope this helps so you never have to use liquid drain cleaner again.

Plumbers Drain Snake

The drain from the kitchen sink has played up from time to time ever since the house was built. Until recently some draino down the sink was sufficient to clear it but it has been getting more and more difficult and requireing more draino to work its magic.

I ordered a plumbers drain snake from EBay the last time I had trouble clearing it with draino and I was lucky enough to have it arrive a few days before it blocked up again.

The video covers the unboxing and the first use of the snake. It worked a treat and more than paid for itself because I think this time would have required a plumber if I did not have the drain snake.
