SMOKERS at more risk of infection with COVID-19? COMPLICATIONS- Dr. Karagada Sandeep|Doctors' Circle

There is substantial evidence that links smoking with reduced immune function. A smoker has lower ability to fight infections and smoking reduces or suppresses immunity. So a person who smokes will be more prone to developing bacterial and viral lung infections and coming to COVID-19, it is primarily a disease that affects the lungs. So a smoker is at a higher risk of developing complications from COVID-19. We are all aware of all the complications of COVID-19 in a harmful way. Those who have asthma, COPD, are at a high risk of triggered complications of COVID-19. I would place a smoker in a smaller category because a smoker with years of accumulation of tar in the lung has reduced lung capacity. So a smoker when they get affected by COVID-19 the complications are bound to be much higher than in non smoker and the recovery is also going to be an uphill challenge for them.

What happens with the coronavirus is it affects mainly the lungs and the person can have breathlessness. Many at times the person might not have breathlessness but the lungs can be affected and what we checked are the oxygen saturation using pulse oximeter and the saturation might starts showing a drop in the level. But the person, might not be breathlessness. This is when it is called as 'Happy' hypoxemia. This is when the person is not breathless but his oxygen level in the lungs are dropping very low and anybody with an oxygen saturation less than 92 needs oxygen support needs to be moved to a hospital and needs to be treated for the same. So it is important to keep checking our saturation if we are diagnosed with COVID-19. Please see your treating physician and follow-up with them on this saturation and checking your saturation using the pulse oximeter.

COVID-19, commonly known as SARS-CoV-2 or severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, is a novel coronavirus, according to experts. Although other coronaviruses have spread in the past (most notably during the 2003 SARS outbreak), this one is new and, as such, has not been investigated. Despite the fact that experts from all around the world have spent countless hours studying this virus, there is still a lot we don't know. How long does your immunity last after you recover from COVID-19? Can you get reinfected? Why do you need to continue with preventative measures? Dr Maria Van Kerkhove explains on Science in 5.

Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Zinc, and COVID - Prevention of COVID
Does colder temperature make you more prone to getting a cold Or COVID?
Most health experts agree that people spend more time indoors and close contact with other people when it's cold, which increases germs spread.
Also, experts believe that our immune system may be more active when our body is warmer, as in during the summer months.
The allure of natural, safe therapies is strong. It's true for both ancient ailments like the common cold and new illnesses, especially if there's no known solution. So it seems to reason that there would be a lot of interest in COVID-19 supplements, whether for prevention or therapy.
The current COVID-19 coronavirus epidemic produces a number of unmistakable signs and symptoms, ranging from fever and a dry cough to more severe symptoms that need rapid medical attention, such as trouble breathing and disorientation.
Because there are presently no antiviral medicines that particularly cure or treat COVID-19, therapy will mostly consist of treating symptoms with supportive therapies.
COVID-19 vaccinations are now available to help protect you from infection with the virus.
If you have relatively mild COVID-19 symptoms and no other medical conditions that would put you at high risk for developing COVID-19 complications (over 65, diabetes, COPD, heart disease, kidney disease, HIV, asthma, cancer treatment), these vitamins and supplements may help strengthen your immune system to fight coronavirus.
Indeed, zinc, melatonin, vitamin C, vitamin D, and other supplements have been widely given since the pandemic's inception.
But do they actually work?
1. C vitamin. For years, this vitamin has been lauded as a go-to source for immune system support. Vitamin C is essential for the health of leukocytes, which are white blood cells that help fight infections. It is especially critical during a pandemic. She advises that people take a 1000 mg supplement twice a day.
2. vitamin D. We usually obtain our vitamin D from the sun, but taking a supplement is a smart idea at this time. Low vitamin D levels have been linked to an increased risk of developing respiratory problems in both adults and children, according to research.
In fact, studies have begun to demonstrate that persons who are deficient in vitamin D are more likely to become infected with the COVID-19 virus. The moment has come to act.
If you have a vitamin D shortage, talk to your doctor or a dietitian about the best way to take the supplement.
3. Zinc. Zinc is essential for the correct growth and function of cells that mediate the immune system.
Adults should take a zinc supplement of 40 milligrams or less once a day.
Vitamin A is advised to be consumed through meals such as milk, dairy products, and eggs, as well as orange and yellow fruits.
B3 vitamin (Niacin). This vitamin supports the immune system by decreasing inflammation and lung damage.
Vitamin B9 (folate and folic acid) — research have shown that this vitamin can help youngsters avoid respiratory infections.
Vitamin E, like vitamin C, is a strong antioxidant that aids your body in fighting illness.
Folate is the natural form, whereas folic acid is the synthetic version that is frequently added to meals for its health advantages.
Iron, which helps your body transport oxygen to cells, is involved in numerous immune system functions.
