Master the Stopped Sliding Dovetail Without a Router

I have to admit, this was a tough call. Was it a stopped sliding dovetail or a lapped dovetail? In the end, I felt it was more of a sliding dovetail. So here is my video on how to make one without a router.

Making sliding dovetails live!

Thought the sliding dovetail seams daunting can be fairly simple once you understand it. tonight I want to show this simple joint and how easy it is!

00:00:00 James Wright: What are we going to do today?
10:00 Cody Bryant: What tools did you buy at the tool meet James?
14:00 Troy Jacobson: Have you thought about selling at a meet, and make a video of it?
17:00 Blue Kestral: would it be possible to make a dovetail plane?
19:00 TheRealEvora: Where do you get firewood for woodworking? I wanted to make a joiners mallet.
21:00 WB Fine Woodworking: James, did you buy the Stanley Number 1 plane this time?
29:00 R. Tawney: Have you thought about selling your tools on eBay instead of a yard sale?
30:00 Ben Simmons: Best mid-range chisels on the market? or ones you would recommend? not happy with my wood river ones.
32:00 Jacob Bly: How do I tell my woodwork teacher that you don't sharpen tools by making 50 different bevels and the steel blue using a high-speed bench grinder?
35:00 Jefariland: That saw looks like it belongs in a Japanese anime. it's fantastical. who made it?
36:00 Mark Baldwin: How did you get the cutter to fit on the router plane so well. it seems the screw on mine is to short.
37:00 Thad Fleming: James, I was gifted about 75 bdft of white oak. Is it worth using?
37:00 Jefariland: I got a bunch of wood from my granddad, is there an easy way to identify what kind it is?
39:00 S Ritchie: Do you know of any cure for hand tool pattern baldness?
41:00 Tom Feller: Can you offer any advice on tips making long sliding dovetails. I amworking on a sliding dovetail that is over 24.
43:00 S Ritchie: What is a relatively cheap hardwood?
45:00 Ben Simmons: i’d love some with a screwing mechanism where the blade and handle can detach semi easily to make flattening easier on the stones, any suggestions there? thanks
46:00 J M: Alright I'll ask a question: How do I convince my wife I should spend 10 times longer building stuff using joints instead of just pocket holes?
47:00 J M: I have a whole bunch of white oak in my basement, I'm building a lounge chair for the pool, how well will it behave outdoors? how best to seal it?
50:00 Jonathan Farmer: Besides Paul sellers, who else would you recommend to follow on YouTube if I'm looking for skilled general hand tool woodworking
51:00 Widukind: what would you say black walnut wood is good for?
52:00 65BAJA: How much pressure do you use when you strop?
54:00Tyler Whatman: can you do a relief carve of a dog out of a log?
54:00 Jake Davenport: How does a high end modern plane compare to a well tuned vintage? I've got some old planes that I love, but I often wonder if modern planes would be with the investment.
58:00 Jefariland: Is there any reason to have a hand drill, if I already have a power drill?

Sliding Dovetails by Hand

Sliding dovetails require great precision especially when fitting them across a wide case side. Cutting sliding dovetails by hand doesn't have to be as hard as you think and in many ways I find I have more flexibility with the joint when done with hand tools. I'll show how I cut them by hand using a saw and chisel. If there is time I'll break out my fancy dovetail plane too.

Circular Plywood Coffee Table

In this video I make a circular coffee table from some scraps of plywood with some tapered round legs.

How to Build a Dining Table with Storage // Woodworking // DIY Modern Furniture

My kids homework supplies were always sitting on my kitchen table and it was too messy... So I decided to build a new kitchen table that will have built in storage to get the mess out of the way! I also wanted to experiment with some new techniques and ideas. I'm pretty pleased with the outcome and learned a ton along the way!

In this video I build a waterfall edge C table. This is my first piece of furniture that has no mechanical fasteners (nails/screws/etc) and my first attempt at a mitered waterfall edge. Overall I'm very happy with the result. The table is built from hickory and walnut sourced locally near St. Louis, MO and finished with 3 coats Tried & True varnish oil and 3 coats of Trade & True original wood finish. Small Wood Bench with Drawer - Design and Construction Details

This small wood bench as an added bonus of having a dovetailed drawer under the seat. In this video I show it's design features and go over how I made it. The video is long but that's the point, on occasion I'm going to do videos like this to really talk about all the details. This gives the oppurtunity to talk about aspects that do not get covered in most build along videos. I give tips, talk about techniques and discuss various design decisions and basic principles. This will be helpful to those of you out there that are looking to design and build your own furniture and get quality results. This bench is a great example of how to get a great looking and usable piece of furniture and use common every day construction grade lumber without it looking like a 2X4 project. It is constructed like many chairs with the addition of a drawer joined with 3 hand cut dovetails on each corner. Join me in this video and hear my thought process when building a piece of furniture. Thanks for watching.

DIY Mid-Century Modern Slatted Bench - Woodworking

In this video, I build a DIY mid-century modern slatted bench modeled after the iconic Nelson Platform Bench, designed by George Nelson for Herman Miller. This is a timeless mid-century modern design that makes for a fairly simple yet rewarding woodworking project. The bench can be built from easily attainable materials, including a handful of 1x2 and 1x3 boards from any home center.
